Master’s Thesis Oral Defense

Before Your Defense

Oral defenses are open to the public and are announced to the department before they occur. When you and your committee members agree on a specific date and time for your defense, email to request a room for your defense. Please email your request at least two weeks prior to the date of your defense. Include your full name, date and time you have confirmed with your committee to host your defense. Upon receipt of your email, you will be advised to submit additional information for your defense bulletin.

After Your Successful Defense

Immediately upon completion of your academic requirements including:

  • Having taken or had waived the GRE
  • Having an Official Program on file
  • Having advanced to candidacy
  • Successfully presenting and passing your oral defense

At that time you will need to submit a Report of Final Examinations or Thesis Defense for the Master’s Degree form to the Graduate Division. This form is needed to complete your graduation requirements, without which you will not be processed for graduation. You can find the form here: The form must be signed by the graduate advisor before it can be submitted to Graduate Division.

Candidates are not required to submit an additional copy of their thesis hard copy to the Computer Science Department.
